Hostage release deadline passes at Ukrainian base stormed by Pro-Russians

  • Ukraine's acting president gave Crimea's leaders a deadline to release hostages came and went after pro-Russian activists stormed Ukraine's navy headquarters.
  • The uneasy standoff between the two could ignite into a bloody conflict.
  • Marina Kanalyuk said seventy or so Ukrainian naval officers had tried to stop the pro-Russians from entering and were negociating with them, but the armed men still replaced the Ukrainian flags with russian flags with no shots fired.

Deep freeze means rise in Great Lakes water levels.

  • The Great Lakes water levels are expected to rise increasingly.
  • Sportsmen, farmers, fish and shipping industry all stand to benefit from the deep freeze in the Midwest.
  • For the first time since 1978 ice has covered nearly all of the Great Lakes.
  • The water trapped below the ice layer has prevented the lakes from evaporating away the same way they have for the past few decades.
  • The lakes are expected to rise 13-15 inches.
  • Keith Kompoltowicz said that although the levels have risen significantly they are still a foot below the all-time average high.
  • Since there is still an ice cover means that it is likely that it will stall the evaporation rates.
  • For Lake Michigan the shipping industry has been forced to lighten their loads because the water levels have been so low the past few years so they will benefit from the rise.
  • Ice cover levels have broke 92% as of March 6th and remains above 80%.
  • The higher levels can also help marinas by having more docking space for boats and the tourism boost because of newly replenished sandy beaches.

Japan agrees to hand over nuclear material to the US

  • Japan and the Unites States have co-signed an agreement to remove and dispose of hundreds of kilograms of uranium and plutonium from the Asian nation.
  • The material will be transported from Japan to a "secure facility" in the U.S., according a statement by the White House.
  • Both Japan and the U.S. are finding new ways to improve the global nuclear security.
  • The U.S. has a longstanding goal of reducing the world'd stockpile of fissile material.
  • The National Security Council said that this is the biggest commitment in the history of the summit process and it is a demonstration of Japan's shared leadership on nonproliferation.
  • Beijing criticized Tokyo for stockpiling nuclear material and suggesting that they can make weapons pretty quickly.
  •  The U.S. hopes to convince more nations to use secure facilities in existing nuclear states to minimize proliferation risks.

Foreign policy expert says: US must support NATO allies

  • The expert Rebeccah Heinrichs stressed that it is very important to support NATO allies and that we need stricter sanctions on Moscow while their troops began to build up on the Ukrainian border.
  • She suggests that we send some military equipment to Ukraine and military exercises because we need to defend our allies.
  • Obama pledged that the U.S. will always uphold solemn obligation, defend the sovereignty and integrity of our allies to the European allies.
  • Rebeccah also says that the U.S. needs to counterbalance NATO's position in Europe, although critics believe that the America is spread to thin overseas.
  • She said that Vladimir Putin understands that he doesn't want to get into a war with the Unites States, therefore we must be willing to actually support NATO allies.
  • Heinrichs lastly said that NATO is an important alliance and we can't allow the alliance to fall apart.
